The Young Misfits

This morning as I walked into my regular store to get my coffee and newspapers, I noticed a couple of young Latinos from the local Santa Ana high School walk in in front of me. Both were “weird” looking and wearing dark tight clothes. But one had on a black t-shirt with the name The Misfits on it.
It dawned on me. These kids, like a lot of youngsters identify with these words, and this image. The Misfits. Where do you see them on TV? Where do they fit? Who are they? Are they Chicano/ Latinos? Are they legal or undocumented? Are gay or straight? So many choices, so many possibilities.
They don’t know who or what they are. That’s why they feel like misfits.
So like President Elect Obama, they are “mutts” or misfits.

THE OBAMA ERA - A NEW ERA FOR YOUTH

With the recent presidential election of Obama, the youth, especially minority youth, should believe that they are entering a new era. An era of hope and expectation. You are living in the best of times.
I’m sure most elderly people would trade places with the youth to see what will happen next, in the next 10 years, 20 years etc. It will be an interesting time to live.
There are so many possibilities now. Young people it is a great time to be alive and to be young.
Maybe the war on youth will be over and the youth will win out.

ALL OF THIS DEBT IS AN ABUSE ON THE YOUTH

As we keep hearing of the financial crisis and govenment bailouts, who do you think is going to have to pay for all of this?  Our Youth, our children, our children’s children up to I don’t know what generation. This is a cold legacy to pass onto the youth.  Kind of like out-of-site, out of mind.
Young people should be up in arms solely on this issue. It’s like we are using their credit cards without their consent and we are raising up the bills. It’s as if parents in a senior home were just spending money since they don’t have to pay the bills. We don’t care since it’s not our credit nor our money. Who is the mature person here?

WAR ON OUR YOUTH

WAR ON OUR YOUTH

I chose this theme because I see it everywhere - there is a sometimes subtle and sometimes not so subtle war on our youth going on. Sometimes it is a war on youth in general and other times it is directed at our youth, our Latino/ Chicano/ Mexican youth or minority youth.
I have always heard of the generation gap between older people and the young people, but this is different because it is a war on youth. In other words there is  a hatred toward our youth, not just a misunderstanding.
